For the final project I decided to do a digital video piece, gathering some clips from different celebrities and designers what they thought about fashion and what inspired them.

In Conclusion….

Fashion is known for always changing, slightly elusive and extremely seductive and has the power to transform an image and make it into a social statement. From this Time Based Art Crossing Boundaries class, I wanted explore and try to engage more into the meaning of what fashion is and how it’s performed to the public; for example, the Fashion Runways or even in the streets. I generally focused on the word “fashion,” looking at different styles of clothes from different designers, viewing their latest collections through the runways and what they thought of fashion but also what the public thought about fashion.

For the first assignment, I wanted to start off as what I thought about fashion and thinking about how would I portray fashion. To me fashion wasn’t something serious, unlike how the designers in the world today. For example, the body had to be ultra slim to fit the clothes, the perfect makeup, hair, stage design, the music and has to be pleasing to the eyes of the celebrities and the fashion editors. Because when we see the usual reality fashion shows and fashion runways the models wearing the clothes are usually thin, had to have the perfect catwalk and the charisma on their face to show that they were serious about fashion and I wanted to break free from that stereotypical structure of fashion. So while that first project was assigned I gathered the idea of a “photo booth” just like how celebrities have in the red carpet, for the late Christmas/ New Year party at the church. This idea was just having fun with fashion, wearing something that he or she was comfortable with and showing off their own fashion to others and break that fashion wasn’t something that had to be perfect from head to toe.

My third project, which was the performance video piece; this time I interviewed myself what I thought about fashion and show what I liked. I tried to display where the fashion starts in my life which was the mall. In this piece I wanted to portray another meaning of fashion, which was fashion was like a shelter for young adults like me. Because of massive stress of school, exam, parents, friends and relationships students like me attend to breakout and fashion was like a shelter for me. I go to the mall and see what is in style now and trying on different clothes and just seeing what others are wearing and how different everybody’s fashion were.

Lastly for my second and the last project, both digital video pieces; the Second piece was just some examples of what the public usually see in fashion. The fashion runways, how the models perform with the clothes that they wear and which trend are in style right now. So I designed it like an advertisement, try to sell the runway collection within the advertisement. The motive of why I did this style of video was because the designers usually set out their collections in runways is to sell the products that were shown on the runway. For the last project; this time I tried to study what the celebrities and designers thought about fashion, what fashion was to them and show the example after each interview.

Looking for the connection from my theme to one of the reading was difficult to find. But the recent article “What is not contemporary art? The view from Jena,” written by Dieter Roelstrete. Fashion and the performance made by the designer are like contemporary art. Basically the article talks about how the public tries to fit in the definition of contemporary art and how it’s portrayed to become something indefinable. This part was similar to my thought about fashion, how every individuals has different opinion of what fashion is and try to judge others if they were in style or not. The article continues about how everyone carries out different options about what is art and not. As I said before, people think they have to be slim and only wear designer’s clothes, have to have perfect hair and makeup to be more appealing to the eyes and I included. But fashion is something that brings enjoyment to the eyes but also to have fun dressing up, there shouldn’t be any criticism or get the wrong idea of what fashion is and judge others about what fashion truly is or not.

Assignment 3: Performance Project

For my performance piece, I decided to not really "perform"
but to show how I take fashion
into daily life, how I think about fashion.

For example shopping, looking at the displays that
the clothes stores put on as to show what they sell and what they want to sell.
So its basically me shopping something that is "my style" fashion.
